Secondary French Programs

In Ontario, French is compulsory in Grade 9, and BHNCDSB offers multiple entry points so students can find the right fit based on their previous learning and confidence level.

Students and families are encouraged to talk with their Grade 8 French teacher when selecting Grade 9 courses. BHNCDSB secondary pathways include:

FSF1O Core French Open

This course is designed for students who have little or no previous knowledge of French or have not accumulated the minimum, of 600 hours of elementary Core French instruction. This course in an introductory level that helps students begin to understand and speak French in guided and structured interactive settings, and will develop fundamental skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through discussing issues and situations that are relevant to their daily lives. Throughout the course, students will develop their awareness of diverse French-speaking communities in Canada and acquire an understanding and appreciation of these communities. They will also develop a variety of skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

FSF 1D Core French Academic

This Grade 9 Single Streamed French course in Ontario (since 2022) refers to the new, de-streamed approach for Grade 9 Core French designed to provide an accessible entry for students that have completed the 600 hours of French instruction in the elementary program,  focusing on foundational listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through relevant daily life topics, while also fostering understanding of diverse French-speaking communities in Canada. This means instead of separate Academic (D) and Applied (P) streams, it’s one inclusive course with varied support, aiming to build confidence and lifelong language skills for everyone. 

FEF 1D Extended French

Extended French provides opportunities for students with stronger French backgrounds, including those coming from French Immersion. This course is designed for students who have completed 1260 hours of French Instruction or equivalent. It is an intended pathway for students coming from the French Immersion elementary program or students will a strong proficiency in French language learning.  In the Extended French program, students will take at least 7 credits where the language of instruction is in French over their four years of high school.

DELF: Internationally Recognized French Certification

Students in both Core and Extended French may have the opportunity to challenge (take) the DELF (Diplôme d’études en langue française), an internationally recognized French proficiency certification for non-native French speakers.

DELF certification:

  • Aligns with global language standards
  • Assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking
  • Is valid for life
