During Education Jubilee, St. John Henry Newman, named Doctor of the Church
On November 1, 2025, the Solemnity of All Saints at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, Pope Leo XIV formally announced St. John Henry Newman as a Doctor of the Church during the Mass concluding the Jubilee of the World of Education. This announcement followed an earlier Vatican confirmation on July 31, 2025, which recognized Newman’s significant contributions to theology and Christian doctrine. Calling him a model for Catholic educators, Pope Leo XIV announced Saint Newman, who ministered as Anglican before becoming Catholic as the 38th person to receive this honor, and proclaimed him co-patron of education, along with St. Thomas Aquinas.
