Statement from Chair of the Board, Carol Luciani

On June 23, 2026, Trustees of the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board approved a motion to rename the new Catholic secondary school currently under construction on Powerline Road in Brantford, presently named Padre Pio Catholic Secondary School.

In making this decision, Trustees considered feedback from parents, staff, and community members regarding the school’s current name. Trustees recognized that ongoing discussion surrounding the school’s current name had, for some, detracted from the excitement and anticipation associated with opening a new Catholic secondary school.

This new secondary school represents a significant investment in Catholic education in Brantford and will serve generations of students and families. As we prepare for its opening, we want the conversation to be centred on student success, faith formation, school spirit, and the many opportunities this new Catholic secondary school will provide.

Since the school was originally named, the Board has adopted an updated naming process that places a greater emphasis on consultation and community engagement. With attendance boundaries for the new secondary school now established, Trustees determined this is an appropriate time to undertake a naming process that will directly involve the future school community.

The naming process will begin in the fall of 2026 in accordance with Board Policy OPS #400.17.P. Students, families, staff, parish representatives, and community members will have an opportunity to participate in the process. As with all Catholic school naming decisions, the recommended name will require the approval of the Bishop of the Diocese of Hamilton and also the Minister of Education, in accordance with Board policy and the provisions of Bill 33, the Supporting Children and Students Act, 2025.

Trustees are committed to engaging the community in selecting a name that reflects the Catholic identity of Brantford’s newest Catholic secondary school and inspires pride among future students and families.

We are confident that this process will help strengthen the connection between the school and its community while building excitement for its opening.
